The Joint Monitoring Mechanism for Colombia coordinates action to implement the recommendations made in the wake of the IACHR's visit to the country in June 2021. More specifically, this mechanism seeks to analyze and evaluate progress in terms of compliance with the 33 recommendations that were initially considered priorities—28 linked to social protest, 4 linked to freedom of the press and the protection of journalists, and 1 linked to violence based on ethnic and racial discrimination.
This mechanism also supports the State of Colombia so it may develop implementation strategies and comply with these recommendations. These measures include adopting appropriate legislation and regulations; improving access to justice; designing and implementing public policies; reforming and strengthening institutional culture; and developing data-recording systems.
Further, this mechanisms works with victims and with civil society organizations to foster their contributions and participation, with a view to ensuring compliance with these recommendations. And it seeks to improve communication channels to enable the exchange of information about compliance with IACHR recommendations, using the Inter-American SIMORE as the main tool.
