IACHR announces its 188th Period of Sessions and receives requests for public hearings

Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will hold its 188th Period of Sessions from October 30 to November 10, 2023, at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., conducting public hearings in person and possibly virtually.

As of July 24, 2023, applications for public hearings will be received from all Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) through the electronic system available for this purpose in the four official languages Spanish, English, Portuguese and French, which closes on August 11 at 23:59 (EST), Washington, D.C. time.

Petitioners will be informed if their applications have been approved up to one month before the hearings, and the hearing schedule will be published on the IACHR website /en/iachr/default.asp up to ten days before the start of the Period of Sessions.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
