Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural, and Environmental Rights
Washington, D.C. The Office of the Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (REDESCA) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announces a working visit to Bolivia from December 9 to 11, 2024.
The objective of the visit is to assess the impacts of forest fires on the economic, social, cultural and environmental rights (ESCER) of local communities, indigenous peoples and other directly affected people, as well as on biodiversity and ecosystems. In addition, the possibility of formulating recommendations aimed at strengthening policies to prevent and respond to this type of environmental tragedy in the context of the climate crisis will be analyzed.
The delegation, headed by Special Rapporteur Javier Palummo and members of the Executive Secretariat and REDESCA teams, will visit La Paz, Santa Cruz de la Sierra and other areas particularly affected by the fires. During their stay, they will meet with representatives of various state authorities, environmental defenders, activists, members of civil society, academics, representatives of indigenous peoples, and others directly affected by the fires.
To participate in the meeting with civil society organizations, registration is requested through the following form before November 27, 2024, at 23:59 (EST). The meeting will be held in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and the exact time and location will be emailed to those who have registered. In addition, those who wish to provide relevant information prior to the working visit may send their contributions by e-mail to cidh_desca@oas.org , indicating "REDESCA Bolivia 2024 Visit" in the subject line.
The Office of the Special Rapporteur thanks the Plurinational State of Bolivia for its invitation and willingness to provide logistical facilities for the visit.
