IACHR Publishes Guide on Best Practices and Basic Guidelines to Implement Decisions Made by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

Washington, D.C. – During its 182nd Period of Sessions, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has published its Guide on Best Practices and Basic Guidelines to Implement Decisions Made by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which systematically presents a set of good practices that have proved useful to implement IACHR decisions and recommendations.

The Guide draws on the actions that have been implemented domestically in countries in the Americas to ensure compliance with the Commission's decisions and recommendations. The document expands the available information on the subject, with a view to fostering the exchange of best practices and experiences among the various actors in the Inter-American Human Rights System, in order to increase the implementation of IACHR recommendations and compliance with them, and therefore to strengthen inter-American justice for the benefit of victims, their families, and society as a whole.

The Commission invites States, victims, civil society, academia, international organizations, and the general public to use the Guide on Best Practices and Basic Guidelines to Implement Decisions Made by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
