Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has published a simplified, user-friendly version of Resolution No. 05/23 on the participation of children and adolescents. The objective of this simplified version is to make the contents of Resolution No. 05/23 accessible to children and adolescents to promote their long-term participation in the various mechanisms that make up the IACHR's mandate. The initiative is also aligned with article 4 of Resolution 05/25, which promotes the adaptation of IACHR contents and documents for younger audiences whenever possible.

This user-friendly version presents the IACHR's mandate and the contents and scope of Resolution 05/25 clearly and accessibly. As part of the process of preparing the publication, meetings were held with young people who helped review the text and proposed a writing style and visual design that was appropriate for them. The IACHR implemented this process in partnership with Save the Children and the Latin American Network of Children and Adolescents (REDNNyAS), with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Children (IIN/OAS).

Young people from different organizations took part in the review process, including the Latin American Network of Children and Adolescents (REDNNNyAs), the Movement of Working Children and Adolescents (MOLACNNATS), the Interdistrict Network of School Municipalities of Lima (REDIME), Yo También Tengo Algo Que Decir, and informal groups of children and adolescents supported by Save the Children through its Civil Society Support Program (PASC). The Network of Child and Adolescent Correspondents (RED CORIA), the Network of Children and Adolescents of Central America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic (REDNNACEM), and organized thematic groups from the IIN/OAS also took part in the review process.

The simplified, user-friendly version was publicly presented by the IACHR on August 14 at a panel led by four adolescents from Honduras, Mexico, and Peru and attended by Commissioner José Luis Caballero, Rapporteur on the Rights of the Child, former Commissioner Esmeralda Arosemena de Troitiño, who was Rapporteur on the Rights of the Child between 2016 and 2023, Maria Julia Garcete, Director General of IIN/OAS, and Ann Linnarsson, Regional Director for Partnerships and Civil Society of Save the Children.

The IACHR is a principal and autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose mandate stems from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote the observance and defense of human rights in the region and acts as an advisory body to the OAS on the matter. The IACHR is made up of seven independent members who are elected by the OAS General Assembly in their personal capacity, and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
