Washington, D.C.—The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has announced the public hearings scheduled for its 191st Period of Sessions, which will take place from November 4 to 15, 2024. The hearings will be held both online and in person at the IACHR's headquarters.
Some 35 public hearings are scheduled for the week of November 11 to 15, which will be attended by representatives of States and civil society organizations across 18 countries in the Americas. The hearings will address the rights of women, older people, people of African descent, members of the LGBTI community, people with disabilities, and people in movement and seeking asylum. Other matters to be covered include freedom of expression, university autonomy, the impact of cybercrime, extractive industries, access to healthcare, and gender-based violence.
The hearings will also examine recent developments in the region, including the judicial reform in Mexico and the human rights situation in the aftermath of the elections in Venezuela. There will be hearings to follow up on active cases concerning Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil, and others regarding precautionary measures in the latter two countries.
In line with Article 68 of the IACHR's Rules of Procedure, all hearings are open to the public and will be streamed via Zoom and the official IACHR YouTube channel. Accredited individuals or organizations requiring interpretation or subtitles must register in advance through the Zoom platform using the link in the hearing schedule.
The IACHR will provide further information on connection instructions and security guidelines for public hearings and the meeting with civil society planned as part of the 190th Period of Sessions in due course.
