The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) signed a cooperation agreement today—to be implemented through the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM)—to promote gender equality in the media, consolidate press freedom, and confront gender-based misinformation in the Hemisphere.
Following the ceremony held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the Executive Director of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), Carlos Lauría, said that the organization he leads “has followed with deep concern the setbacks faced by women's rights in the region.” He emphasized that the alliance that begins today “is an extraordinary milestone that marks a tangible commitment to advancing a cause we consider fundamental, establishing a framework for cooperation that will allow us to work on concrete initiatives to build solutions and reinforce our commitment to promoting an inclusive and safe journalistic environment for all women.”
For his part, OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin thanked the IAPA Director for his commitment "to press freedom and fundamental human rights, as well as to strengthening democracy through his work in all societies of the hemisphere. It is courageous, but not always easy," and asserted that this signing "is a strategic step to strengthen the press as a driver of gender equality and democracy," reflecting "our shared conviction that democracy is built through the voices we amplify—especially those of women—and through narratives that promote freedom, dignity, and inclusion."
Among the activities planned in the agreement are an annual journalism award for gender equality, public campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of more inclusive and equitable newsrooms, and promoting the participation of more women in leadership positions within the media.
