The theme of the 49th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which will take place in Medellín, Colombia from June 26 to 28, will be "Innovating to Strengthen Hemispheric Multilateralism," as announced today by the Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs of Colombia, Adriana Mejía, during a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization in Washington, DC.
Deputy Minister Mejía highlighted that the Assembly's theme emphasizes the key role of the Inter-American System in the countries of the hemisphere and the need to adapt to the challenges of the 21st Century. "We must renew our commitment as member states to the values and principles contained in the OAS Charter, but we must also provide Inter-American multilateralism with more effective instruments to fulfill its mission," said the Colombian diplomat.
In the same meeting, the Mayor of Medellin, Federico Gutiérrez, thanked the OAS for the vote of confidence in choosing his city as the venue for the OAS annual meeting. "It will be an honor to receive all of you and to have the opportunity to put on the public agenda issues that are fundamental for the development of our region," said Mayor Gutiérrez.
It will be the third time that the General Assembly of the OAS has been held in Colombia. The previous times were in Medellín (2008) and Cartagena (1985).
