Washington, DC—The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has announced the public hearings schedule for its 192nd Period of Sessions, which will take place from March 3 to 7, 2025. The hearings will be held online via Zoom. This Period of Sessions will include 33 public hearings that will be attended by representatives of OAS Member States and civil society organizations. The hearings will address the human rights situation in 18 countries in the Americas, regional matters, cases being heard by the IACHR, and the monitoring of recommendations and precautionary measures.
The human rights issues to be covered include the situation of migrants and refugees; the conditions of people deprived of their freedom; the rights of indigenous communities; violence, corruption, and state repression in countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, and Guatemala; and judicial independence in El Salvador and Nicaragua. At the hearings, the IACHR will also receive information will be received on discrimination against communities in situations of vulnerability, including transgender women in Mexico; the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in Argentina; people with disabilities in Cuba and Brazil; the criminalization of human rights defenders and justice system operators; gender-based violence; arbitrary detention for political reasons; and public security in Haiti.
The four ex officio hearings that have been convened will address issues such as the rights of Indigenous peoples vis-à-vis extractive projects in Suriname, follow-up on the recommendations of the GIEI in Bolivia, artificial intelligence and human rights in the region, and the monitoring of precautionary measures related to human rights violations affecting ethnic communities in the context of the armed conflict in Colombia.
In line with article 86 of the IACHR Rules of Procedure, all hearings will be open to the public and will be held online via Zoom. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS) whose mandate is based on the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. Its mission is to promote and defend human rights throughout the Americas and to serve as an advisory body to the OAS in this area. The IACHR consists of seven independent members elected by the OAS General Assembly who serve in a personal capacity and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
