Welcome to the webpage of the Organization of American States’ National Office in The Bahamas. Our objective is to showcase the programs and activities contributing to the national development of The Bahamas while promoting a deeper understanding of the OAS efforts in country.
On March 3, 1982, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas became a member of the Organization of Americas States (OAS), however the National Office was not established until 1984 when the Articles of Agreement were signed between the Government of The Bahamas and the GS/OAS. The initial office was opened at #42 Queen Street but later relocated to #5 Village Road in 2012, after entering a partnership with the local Inter-American Institution for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to establish a joint office.
During 2011, the OAS Bahamas Office worked with the Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation (AMMC) of the Bahamas to implement the FEMCIDI Sustainable Cultural Heritage in the Revitalization of Downtown Nassau. This project has successfully focused attention on the historic sites of Nassau, identifying and marking sites while generating greater awareness among Bahamians and visitors alike as well as assisting in the generation of employment.
The reduction in Drug Demand continues to be of major importance as the OAS National Office in The Bahamas works closely with the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and its partners to facilitate local training seminars and conduct surveys to strengthen the capacity of rehabilitative centers and The Bahamas’ National Drug Observatory.
Meanwhile the OAS National Office in The Bahamas continues to promote the OAS Regular Program Academic Scholarship working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and the University of the Bahamas. The Office continues to promote the myriad of scholarship opportunities available to citizens of the OAS Member States.
The GS/OAS celebrated its 70th Year Anniversary in 2018, and The Bahamas’ 36th year as a member state of The Organization of American States having had the following individuals accredited to the office in the capacity of Country Representatives:
1989-1990 Mr. Raul Falconi
