Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression presents its 2016 Annual Report

Washington, D.C. – The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights presented on Friday, April 28 its Annual Report regarding the situation of this matter in the Americas during 2016.
In a critical moment for democracy and freedom of expression in the Hemisphere, the report also includes three chapters on significant topical subjects: Standards for a Free, Open and Inclusive Internet; Silenced Zones: Highly Dangerous Areas for the Exercise of Freedom of Expression; National Case Law on Freedom of Expression.
This is the nineteenth report produced by the Office of the Special Rapporteur, since it was created in 1997.

The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression was created by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to encourage the defense of the right to freedom of thought and expression in the hemisphere, given the fundamental role this right plays in consolidating and developing the democratic system.
