The Organization of American States (OAS), the Association of Judges of Rio Grande do Sul, the Association of Public Prosecutors of Rio Grande do Sul, and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federative Republic of Brazil will cooperate in training judges and members of the Public Prosecutors' Office of OAS member countries, according to agreements signed at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
After signing the agreements, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro stated that the Organization he leads "is proud to promote these types of initiatives that allow for the dissemination of best practices and strengthen cooperation among the countries of the inter-American system." "In the Americas, and particularly in Brazil, the work of judges and prosecutors has been key to guaranteeing rights, reducing poverty, and promoting social peace," he added.
For his part, the President of the Association of Public Prosecutors of Rio Grande do Sul, Fernando Andrade Alvés, called it a “great honor to join this cooperation agreement and to increasingly participate in the objectives of the Organization of American States, thus interacting in this environment we seek: to exchange experiences and best practices for our justice system.”
The President of the Association of Judges of Rio Grande do Sul, Cristiano Vilhalba Flores, said that this signing “gives us even more energy and strength to seek increasingly capable and informed magistrates, and, without a doubt, in an environment of cooperation with all the American states.”
Finally, the Attorney General of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Minister of State Jorge Messias, emphasized that this alliance with the hemispheric Organization “is a clear example of how we can take advantage of the space provided by the OAS to fulfill the constitutional mandate of Latin American integration. These agreements strengthen the alliance and synergy between our institutions for the benefit of the inter-American system.”
The signing of the documents is part of the inauguration of the IV Forum on Current Challenges of the Judiciary and the Public Prosecutor's Office, organized by the Secretariat of Legal Affairs and currently held at OAS headquarters.
