Process for Strengthening the IACHR: Methodology

Information on the Process

On April 9, 2012, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) sent the Position Document on the Process of Strengthening of the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights to the Permanent Council.

This document was prepared by the IACHR regarding the recommendations contained in the Report of the Special Working Group to Reflect on the Workings of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights with a view to Strengthening the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights. This Report and other documents containing the position of States, civil society organizations and other non-State actors that participated in the process are available on the Webpage of the Special Working Group of the OAS Permanent Council. On May 30, 2012, a Preparatory Seminar on the Strengthening of the Inter-American Human Rights System was held. The audio recordings of the presentations and panels are available in Spanish only, on this page.

Also, on March 28, 2012, the IACHR held at headquarters a hearing on the Process for the Strengthening of the Inter-American System of Human Rights (watch video/listen the audio recording), where representatives of civil society presented their points of view on this process.

On October 23, 2012, the IACHR presented to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) a response to the recommendations.

On October 31, 2012, during the 146 Period of Sessions of the Commission, two hearings were held on the Strengtheing of the Inter-American System of Human Rights. All multimedia resources on those hearings are available on this webpage.

On February 15, 2013, the Commission published the draft reforms of the Rules of Procedure, policies and practices of the Inter-American Commission, and opened a consultation period until March 1, 2013.

On March 18, 2013, the IACHR approved the Resolution 1/13, on the Reform of the Rules of Procedure, Policies and Practices.

On March 23, 2013, the Extraordinary General Assembly of the OAS approved by acclamation a resolution which concludes the process of reflection on the functioning of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the strengthening of the Inter-American System of Human Rights (ISHR).
