Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has announced that it will be holding its 174th Period of Sessions from November 8 to 14, 2019, in Quito, Ecuador, at the invitation of the Ecuadorian state. The IACHR wishes to thank Ecuador’s authorities for their invitation to hold this period of sessions in the country, which will help publicize the Inter-American Human Rights System and raise the IACHR’s public profile in the region.
The system for requesting hearings and working meetings for the 174th Period of Sessions will be open until 11:59 PM (EST) on August 29, 2019. Requests for hearings can be submitted by all OAS member states except Ecuador. Click the links to access the system in the following languages: Spanish, English, French, Portuguese.
“We are delighted to have been invited by Ecuador to hold a period of sessions in the country,” said Esmeralda Arosemena de Troitiño, president of the IACHR. “Every period of sessions held away from IACHR headquarters is an opportunity to expand the IACHR’s reach and bring it closer to its users,” she said.
The Inter-American System Human Rights Forum will be held in the two days before the sessions, on November 6 and 7. The forum is organized jointly by the IACHR and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, with the support of the Procuraduría general del Estado. This is the third edition of the Forum. It brings together civil society, states, academics, experts, and victims to discuss the challenges and opportunities around promoting human rights in the region that the inter-American system is facing.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
