First
Meeting of the CEDDIS Working Group (October2010)
Final Report (available only in Spanish)
Within the framework of the
Third Meeting of the Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (CEDDIS), held in April 2010 in
El Salvador, one of the planned activities on the agenda was to follow-up with
the general suggestions produced by the Committee during its Second Meeting, in
August 2008. In reviewing these suggestions,
the
Committee determined the creation of two Working Groups with the objective of
following-up on two issues in particular: the establishment of parameters to
measure progress in the implementation of the Convention by Member States; and
the possible harmonization of Article I.2 (b) of the Inter-American Convention
on the topic of interdiction with Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities.
To this purpose, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama and Peru, accompanied by representatives of the Permanent Missions to the OAS of El Salvador, Chile and Uruguay met in Washington D.C., on October 25th and 26th, 2010. Lastly, the Working Groups were joined to form only one group that discussed both the topic of parameters and the topic of interdiction.
The
Working Group also discussed other issues, such as the financial situation of
both the PAD and the CIADDIS Technical Secretariats, the need to strengthen
communications between the Committee and the participation of civil society.
In addition, they took the
opportunity to receive the Foundation for the Americas for the presentation of
an accessibility guide for disabled people.![]()
