The XVI IACML took place under the auspice and leadership of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security of Argentina under the theme “Facing the Crisis with Development, Decent Work and Social Protection”. 29 delegations of the ministries of Labor of the Americas attended the conference, 18 of which were headed by their Ministers. Furthermore, the meeting had a rich representation of workers and employers, grouped in COSATE and CEATAL, as well as the participation of various international organizations, in which the presence of the General Director of the ILO and representatives of the IDB, World Bank, CAF, IICA, IOM, UNDP and WAPES are highlighted.

Among the most noteworthy results of this XVI IACML are the following milestones: 1) For the first time, the IACML welcomed economic and social development authorities in order to sustain an intersectoral dialogue regarding the answers to the economic crisis; 2) The Declaration and Plan of Action of Buenos Aires were approved, both containing important recommendations and commitments; 3) The IACML will contribute to the G-20 process, following a decision to send the Declaration and Plan of Action of Buenos Aires to the meeting of Ministers of Labor of this Group; and 4) COSATE and CEATAL became permanent consultative bodies of the IACML.

The preparation process of this Conference began with a First Preparatory Meeting, that took place in Washington D.C. on May 22, and continued with the Second Preparatory Meeting on July 22 to 24 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

DOCUMENTS ADOPTED IN THE XVI IACML

The study “The Institutionalization of a Gender Approach in the Ministries of Labor of the Americas” is one of the most important contributions of the XV IACML that fulfils one of the strategic lines approved at this Meeting. Its contribution will lead to future activities in the framework of the RIAL.
